Adopt an Eco-Friendly Habit for Earth Day

Earth Day is nearly here! Have you been thinking about what you might do to recognize the event? If not, it’s not too late -- One Hour Air Conditioning & Heating has some ideas you can use to make a difference, whether you want to go big or keep it simple.

Consider these possible changes and make a plan to show your planet some love when Earth Day arrives this Saturday:

Use your fans more. Fans can help you keep cool all summer long by simply moving the air around. They don’t lower the temperature, but they speed up the process of evaporating sweat and help pull heat from our bodies via convection. Just a few key things to remember: using fans more means you can use your air conditioner less, so raise the thermostat. Also, fans waste energy when nobody is in the room, so turn them off when you leave. Finally, be sure ceiling fans rotate counter-clockwise during warm weather and clockwise in winter.

Go paperless. Lowering your HVAC bill isn’t everything -- there’s ecological savings in the bill itself. By canceling your paper bills and paying them online, you help save even more energy and reduce waste. Plus, you’ll have all your data in one place without any clutter!

Dress for the weather, both indoors and outdoors. When you come home from work in the middle of summer, swap out that business suit for a pair of shorts right away. And when winter arrives, cozy up with your favorite sweater. Just because you have climate control doesn’t mean you should rely on it completely -- seasonally appropriate attire will let you keep that thermostat a few degrees higher (or lower)!

Plant some trees -- and do it strategically. Planting young trees is an old Earth Day tradition and a great way for the whole family to get in the spirit together. But planting specific types of trees in specific areas of your yard can help put shade right where you need it in the summers to come. By blocking sunlight, the right tree can significantly reduce the load on your HVAC system. Consult a landscaping professional if you need help planning.

Make shade on the inside with curtains and blinds. To make life as easy as possible on your HVAC system -- and to save energy along the way -- you need to be able to control sunlight levels in your home. Trees and landscaping accomplish this from the outside, but on the inside, window treatments are the way to go. Block out the hot sun during the warmest days, but when winter arrives, throw those curtains open to harvest free heat on sunny days.

No matter how you choose to celebrate Earth Day 2017, make sure the big winner is the planet we all call home. We think you’ll find that everybody wins when those energy savings start rolling in! And if you need help with other energy-conscious tasks like tuning up your air conditioner or upgrading to a more efficient system, reach out to your local HVAC experts.
