In Florida, even our winters can be warm and muggy. On those hot January days, you’re likely going to turn on the AC to keep your home from getting too humid and muggy. But if your home begins to feel just as bad or worse than the climate outside, there might be something wrong. Here are some reasons why your AC may not be cooling as it should and what you can do to resolve the issues.
Check Your Thermostat
You will first want to double check your thermostat to make sure that it is set to cool. Then verify the temperature at which you have the thermostat set. This may seem silly, but you never know if a family member has changed the temperature under the radar!
Check the Air Filter
If your AC unit is not cooling your home, it could be because your air filter is dirty. An air filter that is full of dust, dirt and other debris does not allow air to flow through it properly. This may be the cause of a stuffy house that doesn’t seem to be cooling. If this is the case with your air filter, you should replace it right away or hire a professional to do so.
Check the AC Unit Outside of Your Home
In order for your outside unit to function properly, it needs to be clean and clear of debris. If there is grass, dirt or other obstructions on or near the unit, you will want to clean it. If you have bushes, plants or flowers planted too close to the unit, you should trim them back so they are at least a few feet away. Your AC unit needs to have some room and space to operate and effectively cool your home.
