Scott Rohrer on How Franchising Strengthened His Family Business

After 45 years of being in business under the family name, Scott Rohrer and his dad in Lancaster, PA, made the decision to convert the Mister Sparky, Benjamin Franklin Plumbing, and One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning franchise brands in 2003.

“We entered into a home services business in 1959. My grandfather started the business, and then my Dad came on after school, and I came on after school. My three sons, as they are starting to graduate, have interest in it as well,” Scott said. “It’s been a great journey as a family business.”

Scott’s business spans five counties in Pennsylvania and they employ about 50 people, depending on the season. Scott says joining a franchise was an easy decision because of the great benefits that Mister Sparky, Benjamin Franklin Plumbing, and One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning has afforded these businesses and his family.

He believes in following the processes and best practices from the franchises. “Why be a franchise if you want to try and do everything your own way?” Scott said. “’ Just keep it simple’ is our motto. Follow the book and run with it.”

Being a part of a franchise has allowed Scott to focus more on the business and what they do best without having to reinvent the wheel every day.

“The systems and process are put in place,” Scott said. “We just need to implement them and follow them.”
