About Torrington, CT - Happy to Be Your Hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
The Northwest Hills, also known as the Litchfield Hills, is a geographic region located in the northwestern corner of the state which roughly makes up all of Litchfield County. The region includes rural Northwestern Connecticut and the area associated with the city of Torrington.
Torrington, the largest city in Litchfield County, is also the core city of Greater Torrington, one of the largest micropolitan areas in the United States. The city population was 36,383 according to the 2010 census. Torrington is a former mill town, as are most other towns along the Naugatuck River Valley and was known for its manufacturing and production of a variety of metal products, including needles, brass, hardware, bicycles, and tacks. Downtown Torrington is home to the Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts, which trains ballet dancers and whose Company performs in the Warner Theatre, a 1,700 seat auditorium built in 1931 as a cinema by the Warner Brothers film studio.
The Litchfield Hills, like the rest of Northwest Connecticut, are known for their distinct rural scenery, town greens, fall foliage and historical architecture. The region is a key part of the Housatonic River and Farmington River watersheds, and encompasses a number of Connecticut's highest peaks, such as Bear Mountain, Round Mountain, Gridley Mountain and Haystack Mountain. Due to the higher elevation, this region generally experiences colder temperatures. Wintertime usually brings enough snow for downhill skiing at nearby Ski Sundown in New Hartford and Mohawk Mountain Ski Area in Cornwall or cross-country skiing and sledding at nearby Topsmead State Forest in Litchfield. The hills comprise the southernmost portion of the Berkshires and also plays host to a large portion of the state's small vineyard and wine industry.
In summertime, when the hot humid weather arrives, residents enjoy fishing, swimming, hiking and picnicking at various state parks and recreational areas such as Burr Pond State Park, Peoples State Forest, Kent Falls State Park, White Memorial Conservation Center, and Talcott Mountain State Park.
