When you live somewhere that is as consistently hot as Miami is, you are going to be running your air conditioner a lot. Modern ACs make living in such a hot place a whole lot more pleasant than it otherwise would be. However, you have to factor in the cost of running an air conditioner that much. The electricity necessary for cooling your home does not come for free, after all.

Now, modern air conditioning systems are more efficient than ever before. That doesn’t mean, though, that you shouldn’t look to save a bit of money wherever possible. Here are a few simple tips to help you do so.

  1. One of the simplest ways in which to save money when cooling your home is to turn up the temperature a bit when you’re out for the day. You don’t want to turn your air conditioner off, mind you, as you’ll then come home to an uncomfortable environment and have to start your cooling from scratch. Raising the temperature by just a few degrees, on the other hand, won’t mean a long wait time to bring the temperature back down to the desired level, and you won’t be paying to excessively cool an unoccupied home. We recommend using a programmable thermostat that can work around your schedule automatically.
  2. Another way in which to keep your system working at maximum efficiency levels is to ensure that you change your air filters regularly. We recommend that you do so monthly, but there is no hard and fast rule as to when the filter in your system will need to be changed. It is best to at least check on it monthly to assess its condition, though. When air filters are dirty, they increase airflow resistance in the system. This makes it more difficult for the system to force air through your home, so it will use more energy in doing so.
  3. Finally, remember to schedule routine AC maintenance if you want to make a sound investment. The cost of maintenance is not only entirely justified by the benefits it has for your system, but it can also be offset with your energy savings. Now, in many areas an air conditioner will only need to be tuned up once a year. Not so in our area, though. Because we run our air conditioners so heavily throughout so much of the year, twice a year tune-ups are really recommended.

Even if you are not overly concerned with saving money when cooling your home, these steps should still be taken into consideration. Taking some of the strain off of your air conditioner and scheduling regular maintenance will help to keep repair needs to a minimum, and may also help to extend the lifespan of the air conditioner.
