Is Your Air Conditioning Unit Low on Freon?

AC Pipe

Like gas for a car, Freon, or refrigerant, is what makes your air conditioner run. When it gets too low, your AC is not able to cool your home as it should, and it can also cause severe damage to your air conditioning unit. If you notice any of the below signs that your refrigerant is low, call us at One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning in Aberdeen.

It’s Taking Too Long to Cool the House

Refrigerant is what absorbs the heat in your air, sort of like a sponge. So without enough Freon, your air conditioning unit can’t absorb enough heat to cool the air well. It’s like not having a big enough sponge.

Your Vent is Blowing Warm or Lukewarm Air

If your refrigerant is very low, you’ll notice that your supply vents simply can’t blow cool air. Warm or lukewarm air can’t possibly cool a room.

Your Electric Bills Are Higher

Your AC will run much longer, sometimes continuously, because it’s trying to get the room to the temperature you set the thermostat on. But without Freon, it will never reach that temperature. So your energy bills will be sky high until you add more Freon.

There’s Ice on Your Refrigerant Line

If you see ice building up on the copper refrigerant line on the outside unit, you may be low on refrigerant. That’s because when refrigerant is low, the inside AC unit’s evaporator coil (the part that cold refrigerant flows through) gets too cold, causing cold liquid refrigerant to flow back through the refrigerant line. This causes the surrounding moisture on the refrigerant line to freeze up. Ice on the refrigerant line is a definite sign to call One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning, because if the liquid refrigerant makes its way to the outside unit’s compressor, it can cause major damage to it.

Compressors are very expensive to replace, and it may even be cheaper to replace the entire AC unit just to get a working compressor. So again, call us if you see ice on the copper line.

There’s a Hissing Sound

As refrigerant leaks out, it will cause a hissing or bubbling sound. The only way refrigerant would be low is if there is a leak somewhere.
