9 Ways to Save Money for the Holidays

With the expenses of buying presents and throwing holiday parties just around the corner, you should start doing all you can now to lower your energy bills. The money you save will come in handy when it’s time to start shopping!

Use the Sun’s Heat

Open the curtains and blinds on sunny days to let natural heat into your home. And in the evening, make sure to close them again to trap the heat inside.

Dress Warmer

Don’t run around barefoot in shorts and a Tshirt on a cold day — it will just make you want to crank up the furnace. Instead, leave the thermostat down and wear sweatshirts and fuzzy socks to stay warm.

Turn Your Fan Backwards

During warmer months, your fan has been counterclockwise to pull hot air up. Now that it’s colder, turn your fan clockwise to trap warm air in the room and prevent the furnace from kicking on.

Lower Your Thermostat at Night

If you lower your thermostat between 5 and 10 degrees at night, you can save up to 15% on energy bills in a year. Snuggle into flannel sheets in your footie pajamas and enjoy a cool, cozy night of sleep.

Change Your Furnace Filter

A furnace filter is a cheap purchase that can lower energy bills. Replacing yours every month will allow your furnace to run much more efficiently.

Add Moisture to the Air

Moist air holds heat better, so consider using a humidifier in the room where you spend a lot of time, or talk to One Hour Heating and Air about a whole house humidifier.

Check on Your Insulation

Heat that leaks out is literally money out the window (or door…or attic…). If your weather stripping or caulk around doors and windows is worn out, replace it. And if you don’t know what to look for when it comes to checking insulation in your attic, call an insulation company. It will be well worth it to have extra insulation blown in when frigid temperatures arrive.

Use Exhaust Fans Sparingly

While it’s important to turn on exhaust fans while cooking in the kitchen or using the bathroom, it’s even more important to turn them off in order to keep heat in your home.

Schedule a Furnace Maintenance Visit

If you haven’t had your furnace checked in a while, it may not be running as efficiently as it should which can make your bills much higher. One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning can take a look and clean all the components of your furnace and HVAC system to make sure your bills stay lower all season.
