How to Maintain Your Heating System at Home

When it comes to having effective an energy efficient heating, heating system maintenance is a must. Fortunately, DIY heating maintenance is not too difficult or time consuming for most homeowners. Our heating and air conditioning service technicians at Duggan's One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning® explain how to maintain your heating equipment at home so that you and your family can enjoy a comfortable indoor environment this winter.

Check the Air Filter

If you only do one maintenance activity for your furnace or heat pump, it should be checking and cleaning or replacing the air filter. The air filter traps dust, dirt, and other debris and prevents it from infiltrating the living spaces of your home. When the air filter becomes filled, the pores are clogged and air is less able to pass through. This causes the furnace or heat pump to work harder and consume more energy. Air filter cleaning or replacement could reduce the system's energy consumption by 5-15%. Check the filter each month and clean it or replace it as soon as it looks dirty.

Clean Vents

At least once each heating season, remove the intake and outgoing vent covers and use the vacuum hose to remove dust and dirt. Doing so will help improve airflow and air quality.

Remove Obstructions

Furnaces and heat pumps need several feet of clearance in order to perform at their peak level. Remove any boxes or other items stored next to the indoor components of your heating equipment. Outdoors, cut back any overgrown tree branches and other plant growth that could interfere with the airflow around the condenser unit of a heat pump.
