Learning the various parts of your HVAC system might not be at the top of your to-do list, but understanding the components within your system can help you assess and repair problems and save money in the long run. For this week’s Know Your AC, we’re detailing everything you need to know about air handlers.

What Does the Air Handler Do?

The air handler is a device that works to regulate and circulate air within your HVAC system. The air handler contains a blower and other heating and cooling elements, filter racks, dampers and the like, all which are housed in a large metal box. The air handler connects to the ductwork, and works to distribute the cooled or heated air to and from the system.

Common Air Handler Problems & How to Fix Them

While air handlers are durable, they can malfunction from time to time. These are some of the most common air handler issues that may occur and how you can fix them:

  • There’s a leak: You may notice that there is condensation in the pan located near the air handler. This is typically caused by algae, which builds up in the drain lines and starts to clog. As this occurs, the pan can overflow and even cause water damage. If you suspect this is the issue, clean the drain pain and clear any blockage that may have occurred.
  • The fan belt is damaged: The fan belt is the most exposed component within the air handler, making it very susceptible to damage. If the fan belt is damaged or becomes loose, it will need to be fixed or replaced by a trained technician right away.
  • The motor is burnt out: The air handler fan runs thanks in part to the motor. Without regular maintenance however, the motor can burn out and disrupt your entire system. If the motor is burnt out, call a professional at One Hour Air to address the issue.
