When it comes to your air conditioner, you need to keep it clean for it to run its best! That’s why it’s important that homeowners take the time to look after their system and clean it regularly.

With most AC’s, however, the real problems aren’t always visible. While your system may appear clean from the outside, harmful bacteria could be growing inside. This can cause damage to your system and affect its performance. Luckily, there is a simple solution to keeping your system clean and running it’s best. Adding some vinegar to your drain line every month can keep it clean and bacteria free.

What Is a Drain Line?

During the refrigeration cycle, your AC’s evaporator coil produces condensation. This water is then collected and filtered out of your system through a small PVC pipe called the drain line.

A clean drain line is vital to your system’s performance. Bacteria can start to grow inside the drain, clogging the line and preventing water from leaving. When this happens, the drain starts to overflow, causing water to leak. Many homeowners won’t even realize that there is a problem with their drain line until they find a pool of water coming from their system.

That’s why regularly cleaning the drain line is so important. Not only does it keep your line clear, but it also gives homeowners the chance to inspect their drain line. This why they can catch potential problems before they turn into big issues.

How To Clean Your Drain Line

Cleaning your drain line is easy and quick! All it takes is 1/4 cup of vinegar, and a couple minutes of your time:

1. Find your drain line. It should be near your drain pan, located near the air handler. In most homes, this will be in an attic, basement or utility closet. The drain line is the PVC pipe that sticks straight up with a small cap on the top.

2. Remove the cap.

3. Pour in 1/4 cup of distilled vinegar. If the vinegar will not go down the drain line, then it may already be clogged. If this is the case, you can either attempt to unblock it yourself or call a professional.

4. Place the cap back on the drain line.

To keep your AC clean, repeat this once a month.
