A Boiler or a Furnace – Which Way Should You Go?

If you’re thinking of replacing your old heating system, you may be trying to decide between a boiler and a furnace. While there are definite advantages and disadvantages to both of them, you need to put forth some effort to make sure you are as educated as possible. At AC One Hour, we provide boiler services as well as furnace services, so we’ll have you covered no matter what your final choice may be.

What are the Differences?

A furnace begins its heating process by igniting either gas or fuel oil. While the fuel burns it heats a component known as a heat exchanger, A blower draws air across the surface of the heat exchanger, and the resulting warm air is pushed through your home’s ducts. A boiler also uses a heat exchanger, but instead of fuel, water is used to distribute heat. Pipes carry heated water through your home, and the energy created by that water is released through grills, radiators or convectors. Radiant systems include pipes that are embedded in ceilings and floors that diffuse heat more efficiently than other boiler systems. You should always call a Chicago professional if you ever need furnace services or boiler services.

Which is Better?

There are strong cases for both boilers and furnaces. Radiant heat is evenly dispersed through a building through a boiler system, thus eliminating cold spots and drafts. Boilers don’t have blowers, so you don’t have to worry about any allergens coming through your ducts. They are also much quieter than furnaces. On the other hand, furnaces are much less expensive in comparison to radiant systems, and you can use the existing ductwork in your home in most cases. Also, maintenance and repair services are typically less expensive as well.
