When you turn up the thermostat, you expect the heat to engage and start warming your home. However, it doesn’t always work this way. When your heater isn’t coming on properly or it isn’t warming your home fast enough, there are a few steps you can take to try fixing the problem at home. If you cannot get your furnace running after trying these simple steps, call Northern's One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning® for prompt service.

Weak Airflow

The furnace is on and you can feel heat coming out of the vent, but the airflow seems weak. The problem could be a misaligned blower, or it may be that you have waited too long to change the air filter. Clogged filters inhibit airflow through the system and may cause this problem. Put a clean filter in and see if the problem resolves. Avoid calling for heating system repair by changing filters monthly.

The Furnace Won’t Turn On

When you are bumping up the heat and nothing is happening, your first thought may be to call a Minneapolis heating company for service. However, it may be a simple problem that you can fix. Start by looking for blown fuses or tripped breakers at the main panel. The furnace should have a power switch on or near the furnace. Check to make sure this switch was not accidentally turned off.

Shaking & Rattling

Older furnaces can be noisy, and you may long for a new heater installation to enjoy one that is quiet and energy efficient. However, you may not have to spend that much money. Check the access panels to make sure they are not loose. You can also call Northern’s to have the blowers lubricated, belts adjusted or replaced, and burners cleaned. All of these steps will make your furnace quieter and help you save money over the cost of a new system.
