We often get calls asking how much we charge to add refrigerant to a system. Without determining what the problem is, we cannot, in good conscience, answer that question over the phone. Would you accept a diagnosis from a doctor without having them actually examine you? Before we can provide you any information, our trained professionals will need to do the following:

Perform a Complete System Evaluation

HVAC is a simple concept with complicated technology. Many moving parts are responsible for the proper function of your air conditioner or air handler. Refrigerant, for example, changes back and forth from liquid to gas as it moves between two sets of coils (one indoors and one outdoors) through anywhere from 150-200 pieces of pipe, elbows, and fittings. Although leaks can occur, your system should not need a refill every year. An evaluation is necessary to diagnose the problem.

Provide Options for Repairs

Once the evaluation is complete, our experienced technicians will explain the issue in detail and present options for any recommended repairs (including a leak search or recharge). No work will be done without your approval! Please note, you must be 608 certified with the Environmental Protection Agency before you are eligible to purchase or handle refrigerant. So how much is needed? A good rule of thumb is 2-4 pounds per ton. For example, if you have a three ton air conditioning unit that has zero refrigerant in it, it will need approximately 12 pounds of refrigerant.

Explain the StraightForward Pricing® Guide

We don’t charge by the pound or by the hour. Our StraightForward Pricing® Guide simplifies the process and gives you minimal options to choose from based on the needs of your system. If your air conditioner or heat pump was installed before 2010, it most likely uses R-22. To read about its phase-out, check out our previous blog post here.
