Springtime has traditionally been a season of flinging open the doors and windows and undertaking the task of giving your home a deep clean. Spring cleaning as an annual tradition began as a way to clean out the ashes and grime that developed from heating the home all winter with wood and coal.

While most homes no longer primarily use coal or even wood to heat the home, we still keep our homes closed up tight against the chilly winter air each winter. Throughout the cold months, our homes become stuffy and maybe even a little smelly. So, when those first welcome days of Spring arrive, we are ready to scrub away the winter!

This year add the 11 items on our downloadable checklist below to your spring cleaning list to ensure that the air you breathe is also getting some attention by prepping your HVAC system for the warmer months.

How to Properly Air Out the House

  • Open the doors and windows.

Allowing fresh air in to break up the stuffy, standing air will give your space a much-needed “breath of fresh air.”

  • Test your air conditioner.

Turn on your air conditioner, which will allow air to begin circulating in your home.

How to Clean an Air Conditioner

  • Clear the AC unit.

Clear away the debris from your outdoor air conditioning unit, ensuring that there is proper space for airflow.

  • Spot clean the AC unit.

Using a soft cloth and a mild detergent, brush away any dust from the air conditioner coils and scrub away any stubborn dirt. (Be sure to  turn off the power to your unit beforehand.)

HVAC Maintenance

Don’t get stuck in blistering heat with a broken AC unit. Schedule regular check-ups to ensure that your AC unit is thoroughly maintained and catch small problems before they become big headaches.
