Everyone should want to save energy. When you save energy you not only save money, but you are also helping to preserve the earth. Check out these 10 ways to save energy.

1. Use cold water to wash your clothes.

Most clothes don’t need to be washed in hot water, so set the temperature on the cold setting. Conversely, if you need to wash some extra dirty clothes, select a warm wash instead of a hot one.

2. Plants trees near your house.

One of the best ways to keep your house cool is to plant trees around it. Planting trees is not only an effective way to cut costs, but it also spruces up your yard.

3. Check for leaks.

One of the easiest ways to cut costs is to check your water pipes for leaks. To detect leaks, don’t use any water for two hours then compare the before-and-after numbers on your water meter.

4. Weatherproof your house.

Seal up your windows and weatherproof your doors. Weatherstripping often becomes worn out and cracked over time. Apply some caulking around the windows of your home and you should see your energy bill dip.

5. Turnoff wasteful devices.

Many electronic devices stay on, even when not in use. These so-called vampire devices use small amounts of energy that can cost you big. The simplest solution is to unplug any technological devices when they’re not in use or you can buy a power strip.

6. Insulate your hot water heater.

If you have an electric hot water heater, consider wrapping it in a special insulating blanket. You can also turn down the heater’s thermostat to a lower temperature.

7. Make sure you use fans.

At night it’s not as hot, so turn up your thermostat and turn on a fan. During the day when the temperature rises the air conditioning will turn on again, but you will save a night’s worth of electricity.

8. Switch to better light bulbs.

Old light bulbs should be replaced with more efficient CFL and LCD lights. Turning off the lights when you leave the room can also cut money off your electric bill.

9. You should reduce your water usage.

A simple option for saving energy is to reduce the amount of water you use with low-flow showerheads. Something as simple as turning off the water while you brush your teeth can save a substantial amount of water.

10. Make sure to control your thermostat.

Set your thermostat on 78 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer and raise it a few degrees when you leave the house.
