When buying any new appliance, the savvy shopper checks all of the ratings. The Internet, magazines and friends can all give you advice on what to buy, but, when it comes to your AC, there is one rating that is more important than all. This rating is the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), which measures the cooling efficiency of an AC. Understanding how the SEER rating works benefits homeowners’ comfort and wallets.
What Is SEER?
Just like we measure how many miles per gallon cars get, we want to know how much cooling power we receive for the energy put in. This is when SEER comes in. Taking the cooling output and dividing it by the total electric energy input determines the SEER rating.
For today’s commercial air conditioners, the SEER rating will be anywhere from 13 to 28. The higher the number is, the more efficient the system. Unfortunately, not long ago anyone could get an air conditioner with an SEER rating as low as 8. However, because of environmental concerns, all systems that come with an SEER rating of 12 or lower have been banned.
For most of the country, a SEER rating of 14 or higher is good enough. However, because of the high cooling demand in Florida, it’s recommended that homeowners get a system with at least a 16 SEER rating.
Why Does SEER Matter?
When it comes to buying a new AC, the SEER rating should be the first thing that crosses your mind. Just some of the ways a high SEER rating can help you include:
- Lower Electricity Bill. The higher the SEER, the less energy that is being used. It’s estimated that installing an AC with a SEER of 16 can save you over $2,000 throughout the life of your system. The higher the rating the more the savings!
- Better For the Environment. Not only is a high SEER rating better for you, it’s better for the environment. High-rated air conditioners produce less CO2 than other ACs.
- Improved Home Comfort. Higher rated air conditioners are better at cooling homes. This means improved home comfort for you and your family.
