Is the Rain Damaging My Air Conditioner?

The Sunshine State can receive more than 60 inches of rain annually and is especially partial to flooding during the rainy season. This often prompts homeowners to question the safety of their air conditioning systems during heavy rains. Air conditioners are an expensive investment so it’s no surprise that homeowners want to take extra precautions to protect their systems—but do you really need to worry about your AC during the rain?

It’s Raining, It’s Pouring…

Despite the heavy Florida rains, your air conditioning system will be completely fine during storms. There is no need to worry about the rain causing damage to your system—in fact, trying to protect your system with tarps and the like can actually cause damage. Some homeowners place tarps over their AC in order to protect against rain, but tarps can trap moisture and cause your system to rust. Next time it rains, just let your air conditioner be.

How to Protect Your AC During Inclement Weather

Your air conditioner is generally safe during a rainstorm, but if severe weather strikes, there are certain things you can do to protect your air conditioner. While rain won’t bother your AC, a tornado, tropical storm or hurricane can do damage, so consider taking these preventative measures:

Clear any debris around the outside unit – During storms that produce high winds, it’s a good idea to move anything in close proximity to your AC. Things like patio furniture and large children’s toys can be blown around by high winds and strike your AC.

Cover the outside unit – While covering your AC with a tarp during the average rainstorm isn’t necessary, if there is a severe storm coming your way, you can take extra precaution by covering your AC.

Use hurricane straps – During a hurricane, you can purchase hurricane straps for your air conditioner. The straps basically holster the outside unit to the ground so it won’t sustain damage during a storm.
