How to Kick Allergies to the Curb This Spring

It’s that time of year again when we stock up on allergy medicine and walk around with a pack of tissues in our back pockets. A time when we can hardly make it through a full sentence without…ah…ah-choo! Pardon us. Yes, folks, allergy season is upon us.

You may be tempted to hide indoors with a bottle of nasal spray and a hanky, but the air inside your home could actually be making your allergies worse! Fortunately, there are a few easy things you can do at home to clear the air. Let allergens know they’re no longer welcome with these simple steps.

Clean Air Filters and Ducts

Over time, dust, dirt, pet dander and other pollutants build up in your air conditioning system. If not changed or cleaned regularly, a filter can become a breeding ground for mold and bacteria that is then carried into you air.

To prevent pesky allergens from circulating through your AC system, it is important to change your filter monthly and have a professional technician clean your ducts at least once a year. It is also a good idea to use a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter.

Dry it Out

We already mentioned your air conditioner can become a breeding ground for germs, so just imagine how that might be intensified when excess moisture is present. Um, gross. Humidity is tough to beat in Florida, but something as simple as making sure your air ducts are properly sealed, with no leaks, can help significantly.

If you want to take it up a notch, having a dehumidifying system installed will allow you to regulate the humidity level inside your home. While drier air will harbor less mold, it might also make it easier for dust and pollen to move through the air. A humidity level of 50 percent is a nice middle ground to solve both sides of the issue.

Install a UV Light

Ultraviolet lights interfere with the reproductive cycle of mold and bacteria by disrupting their DNA. Unable to reproduce, the microbe populations die out. Having a UV light installed in your air handler will significantly reduce the occurrence of mold, bacteria and other organisms that worsen allergies. It will also stop germs from circulating through your home, reducing the incidence of airborne illnesses spreading.
