Just about everyone knows the benefits of having a good air conditioning system, especially if you live in the Sunshine State. In a central HVAC system, there are several important parts that work together to cool your home:
1. Coolant: Also known as a refrigerant, this is used to absorb heat as it changes from a liquid to a gas, and emits heat as it changes from a gas back to a liquid.
2. Evaporator: This is where the coolant is converted from a liquid to a gas. It helps the refrigerant become vaporized in order to absorb the maximum amount of heat. Evaporators also contain a fan that draws this warm air in, blows the heat to the coolant, and then sends freshly cooled air into the home.
3. Compressor: This part compacts and pressurizes the gas and heats it up.
4. Condenser: With the opposite job of the evaporator, a condenser turns the coolant gas back into a liquid.
5. Expansion Device: This piece allows only cooled air to slowly flow through it, which drops the pressure and enables the gas to return to a liquid state to be reused in the system again.
6. Outdoor Unit: A metal container that holds the condenser, compressor, and expansion device, usually with metal fins on the sides to allow heat to be released faster.
7. Ductwork: Often made out of galvanized steel or aluminum, this system circulates the air throughout an entire home by providing an organized and sealed path for air to flow inside. Unlike window units that work to cool one specific room, ducts allow a unit to cool many rooms as part of a larger, centralized system.
