What’s a Good Air Filter for Allergies?
The air filter in your HVAC system is the first line of defense against the airborne particles that trigger allergy symptoms indoors. Not every filter does this job equally well. The right filter for an allergy household is different from the right filter for a household with no particular air quality concerns, and choosing incorrectly in either direction creates a problem.
Choosing a filter that is too restrictive strains the HVAC system's blower motor and reduces airflow efficiency. Choosing one that is too permissive lets allergen particles pass straight through and recirculate through the home. This article covers how to find the right balance, what the ratings mean, and how the filter fits into a broader allergy management strategy.
Filter Materials and Air Filter Performance
Air filter performance is heavily impacted by its material and construction. As you’d expect, the top-performing air filters for allergy sufferers may cost a little extra, but you’ll be glad you made the investment.
Here’s how a few types of air filter materials stack up:
Fiberglass Air Filters
Also called “spun glass” filters, fiberglass is the most common type of air filter material used due to its low cost and longevity. However, these are not the best filter for individuals with allergies. They capture less than 10% of allergens in your home, which means they’ll do little to help ease symptoms.
Pleated Fiberglass Air Filters
Pleated fiberglass filters include an additional layer of cotton and polyester to improve filtration. They’re slightly more expensive than traditional fiberglass filters but do a much better job removing allergens. Depending on the CADR and MERV ratings, pleated filters remove between 20% and 50% of allergens.
HEPA Air Filters
High-efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters are considered the best option for allergy sufferers because they remove 98% of airborne pollution. Used in portable air purifiers, HVAC systems, or whole-house air purifiers, HEPA filters are so thick they require an especially powerful fan (or two!) to push air through. These are the most expensive air filters and aren’t compatible with all devices or systems. What the Ratings Mean: MERV and CADR
Two rating systems matter for allergy filter selection.
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is the standard used to rate how effectively a filter captures particles across three size ranges. MERV ratings run from 1 to 20, with higher numbers indicating finer filtration. For allergy households, the relevant particle sizes are in the 1 to 3 micron range, which covers most mold spores, dust mite allergen fragments, and fine pollen. Standard filters rated below MERV 8 do not capture particles in that range reliably. Filters rated MERV 11 to 13 capture 85 to 98 percent of particles in the 1 to 3 micron range and are the appropriate target for households managing pollen, dust mite, or pet dander allergies.
Filters above MERV 13 provide even finer filtration but create significantly more airflow resistance. MERV 16 and above are typically found in hospitals and clean rooms, not residential HVAC systems. Pushing a residential blower through a filter that restrictive strains the motor and reduces the effective airflow the system can deliver. Most residential HVAC systems are designed for filters in the MERV 8 to 13 range.
CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) measures how many cubic feet of clean air a device moves per minute for a specific particle type. CADR applies primarily to portable air purifiers rather than HVAC system filters, but it is relevant when evaluating whether a portable unit supplements the central system adequately. The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers recommends a CADR of at least two-thirds of the square footage of the room being filtered. A bedroom of 150 square feet benefits from a purifier with a CADR of at least 100. The CADR numbers differ for smoke, dust, and pollen, since filters perform differently across those particle types.
For context on how CADR compares across device types, a standard 1-inch HVAC filter achieves approximately 12 CADR. A portable purifier with a HEPA filter reaches around 150. A whole-home 5-inch media filter system can achieve 240. A whole-home electronic air cleaner can reach 660. The central system's advantage over portable units is not CADR per se but whole-home coverage: every cubic foot of air moving through the duct system passes through the filter.
What Filters Don't Capture: VOCs and Gases
Particulate filters, regardless of MERV rating, do not capture gaseous compounds. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from cleaning products, off-gassing furniture, paint, adhesives, and cooking byproducts are not particles and pass straight through mechanical filter media. VOC accumulation indoors is a separate concern from particulate allergens, and it requires a different solution.
Activated carbon filter media addresses VOCs through adsorption, binding gaseous compounds to the carbon's large internal surface area. Common household VOC sources like candles and fragrance products contribute to indoor air quality problems that particulate filters cannot address. Some hybrid filters combine a pleated polyester layer for particulate capture with an activated carbon layer for VOC and odor reduction. These are particularly useful in urban homes or in households where cooking odors, pet smells, or chemical sensitivities are a concern alongside particulate allergies.
Standalone activated carbon filters are also available for installation upstream of the main filter in the duct system. These need replacement more frequently than particulate filters because the carbon saturates and loses effectiveness as the adsorption sites fill.
Beyond the Filter: Other IAQ Tools for Allergy Households
A well-chosen, regularly replaced HVAC filter is the foundation of indoor allergen management, but it is not the complete solution. Other tools address what filters alone cannot.
UV air purifiers installed at the air handler neutralize biological particles including mold spores, bacteria, and viruses that circulate through the duct system. UV light sterilization works on biological contaminants at the air handler level continuously, which prevents the mold growth on the evaporator coil surface that can develop in humid conditions and then distribute through the home each time the system runs.
Humidity control addresses dust mite populations, which are among the most common indoor allergen sources. Dust mites cannot survive at relative humidity below 50 percent, which means a home maintained in the 30 to 50 percent humidity range supports dramatically smaller mite populations than a home running consistently above 60 percent. A whole-home dehumidifier maintains that range automatically, which is more reliable than portable units that require manual monitoring and emptying.
Duct cleaning is relevant for allergy households where significant debris accumulation in ductwork is redistributed each time the system runs. Duct debris effects and pre-winter duct cleaning interact directly: debris in duct interiors recirculates past even a clean high-MERV filter when it dislodges from duct walls, and it settles back into the duct system after the fan stops. Duct cleaning removes the accumulated material rather than repeatedly filtering it.
Portable HEPA purifiers in bedrooms provide filtration in the space where allergen exposure is highest and longest, since most allergen contact occurs during sleep. A central system filter addresses air moving through the duct system. A portable unit in a closed bedroom filters that room's air continuously, including during hours when the central system is not running actively.
Source reduction combined with mechanical filtration produces better results than filtration alone. Dust mite management through allergen-proof mattress and pillow encasements, hot-water washing of bedding, and humidity control reduces the allergen load that the filter must address. Pet dander is reduced by bathing pets regularly and keeping them out of sleeping areas. Reducing the source reduces the burden on every filtration layer in the system.
The Air Scrubber Option
