What Is an HVAC Air Scrubber?

An HVAC air scrubber is a device installed directly inside your home's ductwork that actively neutralizes airborne and surface contaminants throughout the home, not just in the air that passes through the filter. Unlike a standalone portable air purifier that treats one room, a whole-home air scrubber integrates with the HVAC system and operates across every room air reaches while the system fan is running.

The distinction between passive and active purification is important. A filter traps particles mechanically. How ActivePure® Technology Works

The One Hour Air Scrubber uses ActivePure® Technology, which was originally developed in cooperation with NASA for use on the International Space Station, where maintaining air quality in a completely sealed environment was a critical safety requirement. The residential version applies the same photocatalytic oxidation principles to home HVAC systems.

The process works through three linked steps:

Step 1: UV light activation. The device uses a UV germicidal lamp to activate a titanium dioxide-coated honeycomb matrix inside the scrubber. UV light at the right wavelength triggers a catalytic reaction in the titanium dioxide coating.

Step 2: Generation of oxidizing molecules. The catalytic reaction pulls oxygen and water vapor from the air flowing through the unit and converts them into powerful oxidizing molecules: hydroperoxides, hydroxyl radicals, and superoxide ions. These are the same types of molecules that nature uses to break down pollutants in the outdoor atmosphere.

Step 3: Active distribution and neutralization. Unlike a UV lamp that can only treat air passing directly in front of it, the oxidizing molecules generated by ActivePure® are released into the airstream and distributed throughout the home with each HVAC cycle. When these molecules contact bacteria, viruses, mold spores, or VOC molecules, they disrupt the outer membrane of biological contaminants and break the chemical bonds of gaseous pollutants, reducing them to harmless byproducts like water vapor and carbon dioxide.

This proactive distribution is what distinguishes an air scrubber from a standard UV lamp.
